RWTH FH Sports Day 2018: A Complete Success

06/06/2018

The RWTH FH Sports Day 2018 powered by Sparkasse Aachen, which took place on June 6, 2018 was again, with over 3000 visitors, another successful celebration of Aachen’s University Sports. Visitors of the Sports Day could enjoy the radiant sunshine and a colorful mix of tournament, tasters offers and competitions on the sports grounds around the Königshügel. Additionally, those interested, had the opportunity to try out the wide range of sports offered by the University Sports Center (HSZ) for themselves.

Enjoying the radiant sunshine, sports fans had plenty to discover, with over 50 different sports represented at the Könighügel. Be it Lacrosse, Slacklining, or swooping down a snowy slope in the summer heat: Active participation in the tasters is welcome at the RWTH FH Sports Day.

The Flagship of the Sports Day was again the Institute Olympiad, this year. 28 teams, consisting of students, professors and employees of the various institutes and institutions of Aachen’s universities competed against each other in six challenging competitions, testing their endurance, skill and agility. There were not only teams from RWTH taking part, as they were joined by eight teams from FH Aachen. Noting the constellations of the teams, Peter Lynen, Head of the HSZ, highlighted a unique specialty of University Sports: “University Sports stands for exchange across subjects and institutes. In this respect, team building is a central element of the Institute Olympiad. It’s about exposing the strengths of every team member”. In the end, it was the team “Morning Stars”, that prevailed and received from the hands of the Rector of RWTH Aachen University, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Schmachtenberg and the Prorector of FH Aachen, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Wulf, a certificate, as well as the highly coveted trophy.

However, not only at the Institute Olympiad did teams get the opportunity to prove themselves. In eight tournaments, which ranged from Cagesoccer over Tennis to Beach Volleyball, over 1300 participants gave their all to find out who could finally climb the podium and claim the prizes, generously sponsored by the events partner Sparkasse Aachen. Particularly the long term cooperation between the University Sports Center and its partner “shows our connection the University and the importance to the sport for us”, explained Dr. Christian Burmester, Chairman of Sparkasse Aachen. Explaining the bank’s strong commitment of support, he states that Sparkasse Aachen wants to give back to students and inhabitants of the region. Tanja Wansel, public relations secretary of Sparkasse Aachen, is equally excited about the special atmosphere of the RWTH FH Sports Day, which, Dr. Christian Burmester adds, is only possible thanks to the volunteers that made the event a reality.

Due to the vast choice of sports offers, it comes as no surprise, that Ramon Marställer, Event Coordinator at the University Sports Center, had trouble picking out a favorite from amongst the taster offers.

A further highlight of the RWTH FH Sports Day was the Chillout Lounge, which after the prize-giving ceremony provided the participants and over 250 volunteers a relaxed way to end an exciting day.

Those who were still in a party mood after that, could, with a cold drink or two, dedicate a toast to the conclusion of the successful event at the Aftershow-Party at the Apollo – organized by the RWTH Aachen Student Union.
