Colorful Sports Festival at the Königshügel Excites 4,000 Guests!
4,000 enthusiastic sports participants celebrated Aachen University Sports at the RWTH FH Sports Day powered by Sparkasse Aachen 2022 on June 1. After a longer standstill during Corona times, the popular event could finally take place again. The RWTH Aachen University Sports Center (HSZ) offered the guests a colorful mix of tournaments, taster courses, and competitions at the sports facilities around the Königshügel.
Finally Sports Day Again
After three years, the RWTH FH Sports Day finally returned to the Königshügel sports facilities. Students and other sports enthusiasts discovered a lot there. No matter whether it was gymnastics on the wheel, windsurfing on the surf simulator, or snowboarding on an artificial snow slope: At the RWTH FH Sports Day, trying out more than 50 different sports was welcome. Peter Lynen, Head of the University Sports Center (HSZ), was also taken with the joyful hustle and bustle. He said that university sports meant life. Today, the HSZ sees the great need of the students to finally experience sports together again and to celebrate together.
Institute Olympiad
One of the highlights of the Sports Day this year was once again the Institute Olympiad. The coveted participation places were booked up within a very short time. The colorfully dressed teams consisted of students, employees, and professors from various institutes and facilities of the Aachen universities. They competed against and with each other in exciting tournaments. The event focused on sports and fun in equal measure. In the end, the team "Die Spektralstrahlkulären" came out on top. They received certificates and medals from Prof. Sabine Brück-Dürkop, Prorector of RWTH Aachen University, and Prof. Christof Schelthoff, Prorector of FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Team "EINtracht HEIZER" was happy about the honorary prize for the best fans, which was awarded by the FuFAH (Friends and Supporters of Aachen University Sports).
Cooperation Between the Universities
The RWTH FH Sports Day also focuses on the cooperation between the Aachen universities. Peter Lynen emphasized the integrative importance of university sports especially for RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen. Both universities enjoyed working closely together not only in science but also in sports.
Tournaments
In seven tournaments, ranging from cagesoccer to tennis and beach volleyball, the approximately 800 participants gave their all. The winners, who were able to climb the winners' podium at the end, were thrilled to receive prizes from Sparkasse Aachen as partner and title sponsor of the event. Tanja Wansel, Corporate Communications of Sparkasse Aachen, is pleased about the long-standing cooperation between the University Sports Center and Sparkasse Aachen. University sports stands for values such as fairness, diversity, health, and volunteer work, which the Sparkasse is happy to support.
Honorary Work Award from Sparkasse Aachen
An event like the RWTH FH Sports Day would be unthinkable without the voluntary help of dedicated students. At this event, too, numerous helping hands ensured that everything ran smoothly. This year, the honorary work award of the Sparkasse Aachen was presented to Lars Tevort. The long-standing chairman for snowboard distinguished himself by his outstanding commitment to winter sports.
The Sports Facilities at Königshügel
The RWTH FH Sports Day offers not only an insight into the sports program, but also into the sports facilities of the HSZ. The students are excited to finally be able to do sports together at the Königshügel. Juliana Kirchhoff, sports department of the student bodies, remarks that the Königshügel is like a green oasis in the middle of Aachen. The great atmosphere at the Sports Day shows how comfortable the students feel there. The new Königshügel sports hall is scheduled for construction next year; then the university sports department will have to find new space. But one thing the Sports Day has clearly shown: After two years of Corona break, the demand for university sports and events remains high.
More info and the results of the tournaments can be found on the Sports Day website.
