The research project "TrainerAI" is developed and conducted by the Institute for Information Theory and Systematic Design of Communication Systems (ISEK) of the RWTH in cooperation with the University Sports Center of the RWTH (HSZ).
The goal of this research project is to make statements about exercise execution via the recognition of so-called joint points. A camera and an AI are used for this purpose. The participants receive feedback via an app. The app download will be publicly available during the course of the project.
Initially, the app can be used for automated documentation of the number of repetitions and the weights used.
At the end of the research project, the app will also provide feedback on the quality of execution.Copyright: © TrainerAI
Training with TrainerAI
Participants can use the app to train in a time-saving manner. Training successes are transmitted directly to the app. Training plans can also be created and statistical data about the training can be recorded.
To use "TrainerAI," participants must train at a specific training location. This is equipped with a camera that can be started using the app. The camera is used to detect the joint points.
Participants in the "TrainerAI" project receive free feedback on their training and can get in touch with exciting new technology.

A camera is installed in the RWTH Gym to detect the joint points. During regular operation of the RWTH Gym, this camera is not switched on. The project participants can start the camera using the app. The resulting images are only used to recognize the joint points. No video footage is saved.
Both the video footage and the recognized joint points will be deleted immediately after the repetition is recognized. Registration for the app is possible anonymously with an email address. The app's Firebase database is physically located in the EU and is therefore subject to EU data protection guidelines. Training plans and other data in the app can be deleted if desired.
All relevant data protection regulations have been coordinated with the responsible persons at RWTH Aachen University and have been sufficiently checked.
