Uni Cup HistoryCopyright: © HSZ
The Ice Hockey Uni Cup was initiated by professor Christian Mittermayer in 1988. With the support of many a tournament between the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and medicine student representative councils was organized, where fun played a larger role than athletic ability. Professor and student teams were formed, which then competed against each other on the ice.
What began with just a handful of spectators has now grown to over 3,000 people. Demand for tickets is consistently greater than the number of seats available.
In 1999, the event organizers decided for the first time to donate the proceeds from the Ice Hockey Uni Cup to charitable organizations.
Since 2002, the Cup has established itself as a cult event and fixed component of the winter semester at RWTH Aachen.
In 2003, the year of university sports in NRW, a game by the university ice hockey team was held for the first time as an opening event. Since then, the Faculties of Medicine, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering have competed against each other each with a professor team, female team, and male team, to win the coveted cup. They are supported by their loyal fans and cheerleaders, whose support knows no creative bounds. The best cheerleading show has been awarded with the Honorary Prize by the Freunde und Förderer des Aachener Hochschulsports, FuFAH, since 2006. Traditionally the prize is awarded during the closing celebrations at the club Starfish.
