It may come as a surprise but you can even learn to wind surf at RWTH and then show off your skills while on vacation. Regardless whether you want to comfortably bob along with little wind or want to cut waves in a frenzy while grinning, wind surfing is impressive and demands a lot from you and your abilities!
Water Sports Facility Wildenhof
Special regulations apply to the use of the sports facility in accordance with the corona decree.
You need swimwear and sunscreen. Because the entry point at the Rursee is natural and has sharp edges, we recommend shoes suitable for water sports, such as bathing shoes, surf shoes, or old sneakers.
To participate in this course you must be able to swim. This must be confirmed before the course begins.
The University Sports Center also offers an excursion to Ijsselmeer. You can also sign up on the surfing mailing list for other news, carpools, and tips and tricks for wind surfing.
The HSZ is looking for dedicated instructors for all surf sport activities such as surfing courses and water sport recreation.
Prior experience is not required for this course. All participants must have the swimming skills equivalent to the "Freischwimmer" certificate. These skills will be tested at the beginning of the course. If swimming proficiency is insufficient, exclusion from the course will be necessary for safety reasons. Only members of the University are eligible to participate.
In this course you’ll learn how to set up and take down the equipment as well as the technical language for surfing, starting, steering, turning, wind directions, and safety tips. On the last day of the course there is a theoretical and practical exam, which certifies that you have sufficient knowledge about surfing and the rules of the water. This certificate allows you to rent surf equipment anywhere in the world. Thank goodness for the DSV surfing license!
You will receive an email with the information on your course before the course date. After the course you can use the University's surfing card to use the materials at Wildenhof at a discount during the summer semester.
The beginners' courses usually run from Friday to Sunday and end with a theoretical and practical exam and the DSV surfing license. The surfing courses are held at the Rursee. Currently, no accommodation at the Wildenhof is offered.
The Level 2 course is primarily targeted towards individuals who already have a surfing license but haven't surfed in a long time and would like some assistance starting back up again. The course is also targeted towards those who aren't familiar with the Rursee and would like to rent materials there in the future.
The focus will be placed on surfing equipment as well exercises on the water adapted to participants' needs. Due to the unstable wind conditions on the Rursee it isn't possible to hold an advanced course on maneuver training. We recommend our excursions for this type of content and experience.
University students and employees can borrow surfboards at the Wildenhof on the Rursee. Individuals must show their official surfing license from the VDWS or DVS. Against a fee, they can then be issued with the University's surfing permit. This permit grants the holder permission to borrow equipment.
The University Sports Center offers a good mix of equipment, which can be used on the Rursee with the equipment permit. Existing permit holders can extend their permit from the beginning of April on the HSZ's internet portal. The permit must then stamped in the HSZ Service Point or at the administration desk at the Wildenhof. New permits are only issued at the HSZ during the Service Point's opening hours!
Equipment rental is only open if weather permits, starting mid-April. The rental conditions must be adhered to. If you do not adhere to the rental conditions, your University surfing card may be confiscated. Inspections are conducted regularly. All those who didn’t receive the surfing license at the Rursee are recommended to take the Level 2 course, where they will be introduced to the equipment.
The price of the surf card will be reduced by 50 percent seven weeks ahead of the start of the new sports program.
