Out into Nature: The Eventful Summer Just Around the Corner at University Sports
Numerous construction activities, including the demolition and construction of the Königshügel Sports Hall and the commissioning of an interim building, are in store for the RWTH University Sports Center. In addition to exciting events, the RWTH University Sports Center continues to organize its extensive program with few restrictions despite the construction site.
High Demand at the Start of Registration
With the start of the summer semester, the new registration period at the RWTH University Sports Center has also begun. This semester, however, there are two registration periods due to the starting of an interim building. All courses that are not held in the Königshügel Sports Hall have already been released. There were over 6,000 registrations on the first day alone. Registration for sports taking place in the interim building will not be possible until May 2nd. Peter Lynen, director of the RWTH University Sports Center, is pleased about the great demand and looks positively at the new construction phase. The University Sports Center wants to offer as much programs as possible and is glad that a temporary solution has been found with the interim building.
New Sport Programs
The sports selection is once again huge this semester: from martial arts, to dance, to ball sports and fitness, there is always something for everyone. The already diverse sports offerings will even be expanded by three more sports this semester. As a popular sport from the United States, American Football can also be played at the HSZ starting this semester. For all sports game fans, billiards is also a new addition to the program. Exercise in nature is for all those interested who prefer a quieter atmosphere when playing sports.
Construction projects at the Königshügel Sports Complex
Major construction projects are on the horizon at the University Sports Center over the next few years. The Königshügel sports complex will be demolished after 61 years to make way for a new, modern sports facility. Currently, construction of the interim building is still underway. It will be opened for sports operations at the beginning of May. The stadium and running track should be usable again from mid-May. The Königshügel sports complex will then be demolished and a new building will be started. This is expected to be completed in 2025.
Farewell to the Sports Hall Complex with a Final Event
A lot is changing now with the construction site. When something is torn down, memories are lost, says Juliana Kirchhoff, student body sports officer. To reminisce one last time, the event "The Last Dance" will take place on April 12. Students, alumni and everyone else who has taken the hall to their hearts can experience sports together one last time. There will be classes in fitness with music and ballroom dancing. Along the way, there will be rounds of drinks. The profits from the event will be donated to the charitable organization "Right To Play".
Charity Action
Peter Lynen, director of the University Sports Center also announces that there will be another charity action in the upcoming weeks: As a reminder of many beautiful and emotional experiences in the past 61 years, pieces of the floor of the Königshügelhalle will be sold. The money collected will also then be donated to "Right To Play".
Events of the Summer Semester
Despite the construction work, exciting events are already scheduled for the summer semester. The first event will be the RWTH Campus Run on May 5. The running event offers beginners as well as advanced participants great challenges with different distances. On June 14, the University Sport Center opens its doors for the RWTH FH SportsDay. At this event, interested parties can get to know the university sports program through numerous taster courses and tournaments on the Königshügel. Registration for the tournaments has already begun and is available on the University Sport Center website. The end of the summer semester will be marked by a true Aachen cult event: the Lousberg Run will take place for the 34th time on July 5. The traditional run over the Lousberg has a distance of 5,555 meters. It is a popular challenge for runners from Aachen and the surrounding area, especially due to the steep hills and slopes.
Volunteering in University Sports
Organizing these events is only possible with the help of numerous volunteers. Students in particular always have the opportunity to look behind the scenes and be part of a successful event. For students, university sports are an important balance to everyday university life.
