Stadion Königshügel comes alive during the RWTH FH Sports Day
Once again, the RWTH FH Sports Day organized by the RWTH Aachen University Sports Center (HSZ) on June 14 was a great success! Numerous students, employees and alumni visited the Königshügel and celebrated sports together.
RWTH FH Sports Day excites
Games and sports, fun and excitement. On June 14, the RWTH FH Sports Day took place at the sports facility of the HSZ at Königshügel and inspired guests and participants alike.
Daily schedule and program
Starting already at 10 in the morning, the first tournaments began. From 2 p.m. the official part of the Sports Day started. Then it was also DIES Academicus at RWTH and FH Aachen. This means that no lectures, seminars or other events took place on this afternoon for all students of the Aachen universities from 2 p.m. onwards. This gave everyone the opportunity to cheer on their institutes, friends and teams at the numerous tournaments and the Institute Olympics or simply enjoy the atmosphere at the Königshügel sports facility. Professor Malte Brettel, Prorector of RWTH is delighted about the enlivening event. Society is becoming more and more digital. The concept of the university as a physical place is increasingly being called into question. This makes it all the more important to create a place of encounter. Sport is worth having a place and being celebrated, emphasizes Professor Brettel.
Sports Day despite construction site
It was already anticipated in advance that this year's Sports Day would be somewhat different than in the past. The demolition and new construction of the Königshügel sports hall posed special challenges for the HSZ this year. An interim building has been erected in the Königshügel stadium for the duration of the construction work. As a result, space on the grass field is currently limited. For Peter Lynen, director of the HSZ, it was out of the question to hold the Sports Day at a location other than the Königshügel stadium. The stadium is the heart of Aachen's university sports. And you can see that people come and have fun, says Lynen.
Offers at the Sports Day
Nevertheless, the HSZ managed to organize and carry out an all-around successful Sports Day. The program with the popular Institute Olympics and the exciting game sports tournaments could take place as usual without any restrictions. The trial offers could only take place to a limited extent this year. There were some trial courses where students could actively get to know sports.
The Institute Olympics
At the Institute Olympics, team spirit is required above all. Students, staff and professors compete together at various sports and games stations to lead their institute to victory. This strengthens the cohesion within the institute and gives students and their lecturers the opportunity to get in touch outside the university and to share experiences. Professor Christof Schelthoff, vice-rector of the FH Aachen, is enthusiastic about the atmosphere at the Olympics. Events like the Sports Day and the Institute Olympics help to bridge the walls between RWTH and FH students and create encounters away from the lecture halls, noted Professor Schelthoff. This year's winner was the "Road Runners" team from RWTH's Institute of Highway Engineering.
The tournaments
An important part of the RWTH FH Sports Day are the tournaments. The participants could compete in the sports badminton, beach volleyball, cagesoccer, streetball, tennis and table tennis. After an exciting course of the tournaments, the winners could be duly celebrated at the subsequent award ceremony. The results of the tournaments can be viewed on the HSZ website.
Support from Sparkasse
The Sports Day is supported again this year by the long-time partner of the HSZ, the Sparkasse Aachen. The Sparkasse has been supporting university sports for over 20 years. Without the support of sponsors such as the Sparkasse, it would not be possible to hold major sporting events such as the RWTH FH Sports Day. Cooperation with university sports is also very important to the Sparkasse: sports are simply timeless. Sparkasse Aachen has been a partner of university sports for more than 20 years and it never gets boring. The events always inspire anew, Tanja Wansel from the corporate communications department of Sparkasse Aachen is pleased to say.
