In yoga, Âsana, Prânâyâma, and concentration are significant. Postures, the Âsanas, stabilize and strengthen especially the deep muscles, harmonize the functions of the organs and, thus, improve health. Breathing techniques - Prânâyâma - lead to emotional balance. Concentrating on the vital points of the body, the mind comes to rest.

Small Yoga Encyclopedia

There are numerous yoga styles, some of which overlap. There are calmer and slower styles such as Hatha and Yin Yoga, but also more dynamic, athletic, and challenging styles such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, and Power Yoga. In the following, some examples are presented.

Ashtanga Yoga

The word Ashtanga comes from Sanskrit, the sacred language of India, and can be translated as "8 limbs." Here, fixed sequences, "pattabhi jois", are given, which are practiced in the same order. It is a more intense style of yoga where transitions are smooth and connected with breathing.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha means "strength, endurance, energy" (Sanskrit) and is the general term for all physical yoga, that is, physical exercises, as opposed to the mental exercise of meditation. It includes mainly physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and deep relaxation (shavasana), and is the basis of the other types of yoga. However, it has also developed into an independent style of yoga. In this somewhat calmer style of yoga, the body postures are held longer.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga

Vinyasa Flow Yoga is derived from the style of Ashtanga Yoga, but offers more room for creativity and choreography. There are no fixed sequences.

Emphasis is placed on the smooth transition between the individual asanas and the connection with the breath. Vinyasa Flow classes are usually more athletically intense.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a gentle exercise practice characterized by the long passive holding of the asanas, especially of stretching exercises, and is to be understood as a complement to the demanding yoga styles (Yang). The postures are mainly performed in a sitting or lying position.

In particular, the deeper layers of the connective tissue, tendons, fasciae, and ligaments are to be reached in order to release shortenings, tensions, and blockages and to increase mobility. Yin Yoga directs the focus to the inner balance and is intended to harmonize the energy flow in the body.
