Fundraising Drive to Save the 100,5 Arena – Every Euro Counts!
Cheering spectators, exciting tournaments and unique costumes make the Ice Hockey Uni-Cup in the 100,5 Arena the highlight of the winter semester – and they have done so for over 30 years.
Due to the corona pandemic, all events of the RWTH Aachen University Sports Center (HSZ) were cancelled. This has, in the truest sense of the word, put the operations of the 100,5 Arena on ice, placing it in great financial distress. For this reason, the faculties of mechanical engineering, medicine and electrical engineering have called a fundraising drive to save this popular recreational sports facility! Every Euro counts!
With great commitment and creativity, the three faculties designed the yearly fan magazine for the Uni-Cup 2020, in which they are appealing for donations. The hook: If 3000€ have been donated before February 28, 2021, the Rector of RWTH Aachen University, Professor Ulrich Rüdiger will himself become a wager and compete in the Uni-Cup 2021 in the penalty shootout!
“On the one hand, the ice rink is of course the venue of the ever-popular Uni-Cup and is therefore indispensable to its staging. In order to celebrate a comeback of the event in 2021 and many years to come, the ice rink must survive. But also for the city – its students and families – the hall is as one of the city’s few large leisure facilities enormously important and popular. Its loss would upset many”, explained Jaspar Paulus, member of the engineering faculty.
For Aachen’s students, the ice rink plays an important role, not only because it is a popular leisure venue in Aachen, but also because it is the venue of the popular Ice Hockey Uni-Cup. Without the ice rink, we would in future have to do without the popular event that has been going for over 30 years.
The closure of the ice rink would mean the loss of an important cultural component of university life in Aachen. As it currently stands, the total raised is at only 720€!
It is, thus, time to give a little! In doing so, it doesn’t matter how much you can or want to give: Every Euro Counts!
The fundraising drive ends at the beginning of March.
