The spectacular university sports show took place in the Theater Aachen for the first time due to the construction work on the Königshügel. Together with the spectators and participants, the HSZ once again celebrated the great diversity in university sports this year and also honored the most successful athletes from the past year. Elena Tzavara, General Director of Theater Aachen, made this possible in the first place. She naturally wanted to make the stage available to all actors in the city. The university sports show brings a new color to the theater. It is exclusive, colorful and cross-age, she said enthusiastically. Every year, the university sports show demonstrates anew how diverse and important sport is at RWTH Aachen University. Particularly with regard to the RWTH's Realize Diversity campaign, the show featured multicultural appearances and performances, far removed from general clichés. This particularly appealed to Prof. Dr. Alexander Markschies, Rectorate Representative at RWTH Aachen University. It is a central point to stand for diversity. It is important not only to hold a mirror up to people, but also to participate in the process as an actor and to dissolve the constraints and old images. However, the university sports show is not only important for RWTH Aachen University, but also for FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, especially this year. Because the top sports prize went to a student at FH Aachen, Syifa Nurzaman. Prof. Dr. Josef Rosenkranz, Acting Rector of FH Aachen, was particularly proud of this. He was really pleased about it. It's great that this show with the students and sport has found a place in the center of Aachen and is no longer just tied to the campus. The FH Aachen big band "Full House" also provided musical support throughout the evening.
The show at Theater Aachen was completely sold out within a few days. The HSZ organizes a total of 14 major events every year, but the university sports show is one of the most creative. Peter Lynen, Director of the HSZ, was delighted to have the opportunity to stage the show in Theater Aachen. The effect of the theater itself is terrific. The show stands for the creativity, diversity and professionalism of university sport. The special thing about the day was the combination of a lively show and a fantastic location. The show gave all spectators an insight into the wide range of university sports on offer with over 100 different sports. Cheerleading, rhönrad gymnastics, judo and much more! Spectacular sports, impressive costumes and breathtaking performances were not to be missed by around 700 people in the hall. Yves Le Lostecque, former head of the European Sport Unit, Sport Department of the European Commission, saw the show for the first time and was completely impressed by the professionalism and entertainment of the performances.
In addition to the sporting performances, the focus was also on the most successful athletes from the past year. A total of 52 athletes were honored for their outstanding achievements in student competitions; some even received multiple awards. There were ten first places at the German University Championships (DHM) in canoe polo, karate and taekwondo. 32 second places were achieved at the adh-open Rugby, DHM Riding, DHM Rugby, DHM Rowing and DHM Taekwondo. There were also ten third places at the DHM Rowing. UAS student Syifa Nurzaman received the top sports prize for her success at the DHM Taekwondo. The prize was awarded by STAWAG, a long-standing partner of the HSZ. Dr. Christian Becker, CEO of STAWAG, emphasized the importance of such an award for athletes. For many athletes, the awards are probably a unique experience in their lives.
The university sports show in particular is of great value to many. Not only is university sport presented at the show, but above all, all athletes receive recognition and appreciation for the work they put into their sport on a weekly, monthly, even annual basis. One of them was Jonas Dorissen. In addition to his love for gymnastics, he has been involved in the sport of gymnastics for many years as a chairman and was subsequently awarded the Sparkasse Aachen Volunteer Award to highlight this voluntary work in a special way. Dr. Christian Burmester, CEO of Sparkasse Aachen, greatly appreciates voluntary work and emphasized how special the event is for him. Volunteering is particularly important for a functioning society. He himself is very active as a volunteer and is delighted that the Sparkasse is honoring this with an award. Juliana Kirchhoff, Sports Department of the student bodies, agreed and added how important the honorary award is at RWTH. Without volunteers, many things would not be possible in university sports.
The spectacular show was a complete success for all participants, spectators and staff. As the hall at Königshügel will probably still be under construction next year, the university sports show will once again take place in a different location. Perhaps it will be the Theater Aachen again.
