Great Anticipation for an Eventful Summer Semester at University Sports in Aachen

High Demand For Registration

The summer semester has begun and with it a new registration period at Aachen university sports. As always, the demand was extremely high. Already on the first day there were 9,000 registrations. After one week, there are now 14,000. Peter Lynen, Head of the HSZ, is pleased to finally be able to offer a sports program without restrictions again. In addition to physical activity, fun and enjoyment, he says, university sports also offers an emotional experience and creates contacts between students.

Diverse Sports Program

As always, the sports program is very diverse. From ball sports and martial arts to relaxation, dance or fitness, there is something for everyone. New to the program this semester is the inclusive sport of wheelchair handball. This is aimed equally at people with and without physical disabilities. Also new is the trend sport of wingsurfing, a combination of windsurfing and kitesurfing.

RWTH Campuslauf 2022

Besides the regular sports program, the popular events of the HSZ will finally take place in person again this semester. The first event will be the RWTH Campuslauf on April 29. At this running event, participants can choose from two different routes. The FunRun with a length of 4.6 kilometers and the FitnessRun with a distance of 9 kilometers. In addition, there is again the relay run as a team event with a distance of 4 times 2.3 kilometers. Besides the route, entertainment and catering will be provided. There will again be a children's program, as well as music and food and refreshment stands.

Other Events During the Summer Semester

After the Campuslauf, sports continues. On June 1, the HSZ will open its doors for the RWTH FH SportsDay. At this event, those interested can get to know the university sports program through numerous taster courses and tournaments. Registration for the tournaments has already begun and is accessible on the HSZ website. The end of the summer semester is marked by a real Aachen cult event. The Lousberglauf will take place for the 33rd time on July 6. The traditional run over the Lousberg has a distance of 5,555 meters. It is a popular challenge for runners from Aachen and the surrounding area, especially due to the steep inclines and declines.

adh Perspective Meeting in Aachen

In May, the HSZ welcomes representatives from other university sports locations from all over Germany to Aachen for the adh Perspective Meeting 2022. During three days, various activities and seminars on the topic of "Internationalization in University Sports" will be offered. Aachen's unique location in the Euregio helps to bring this topic to life. For example, a day program is planned at the Federal State Representation of NRW in Brussels. There will also be a visit to the EU Parliament to learn about the work of MEPs there. Peter Lynen is excited about the event. The guests will exchange views with some excellent speakers from the EU on internationalization in sports. Peter Lynen expects very exciting discussions.

Future Projects of University Sports

With the return to normal operations in the sports and events program, more long-term planning can finally be undertaken. For the HSZ, three major projects are on the agenda for the future. One is the expansion of student health management with a focus on student health promotion. Secondly, university sports, as well as RWTH Aachen University as a whole, are to become more sustainable. This is being driven forward, for example, by reusable cups at the running events, waste separation and wooden trophies. In addition, various construction projects are in the pipeline, for example on the Campus Jülich or the new construction of the Sporthalle Königshügel, in order to meet the high demand with appropriate facilities.

Peter Lynen sums up: After more than two years, the HSZ is pleased to finally be able to offer a summer semester with events in person and a normal sports program. Hopefully, the target group will show great interest.
