The German divers were impressive with a strong first day of competition. In the discipline synchronized diving from the 3-meter board, Alexander Lube from RWTH together with Lou Massenberg from HTW Berlin took second place.

A pleased Alexander Lube said that they are extremely satisfied with the competition and did not think that they would be able to keep up with the Chinese. All the happier they are with their performance and that they have fully exploited their potential.

The FISU World University Games in Chengdu will run until August 8. In the next days Alexander Lube will compete in the discipline single from the 3-meter board. Congratulations from the University Sports Center for this great performance and good luck for the further competition!

Further German successes: Historic Judo Gold at the FISU Games

Falk Petersilka (University of Cologne) was the first German judoka to triumph at the World University Games. In the weight category up to 100 kilograms, the student of human medicine won the gold medal in a gripping final. The decision against Kaito Green of Japan came only six seconds before the end of regular fighting time. He was very happy about winning the gold medal. It was an excellent day all around, Petersilka said happily after his final victory. Already in the preliminary round, the student made a concentrated impression. Round after round, Petersilka defeated his opponents early. He had felt fit and good from the start, the 25-year-old looked back.

Rounding out the best performance of German judoka at World University Games was Raffaela Igl (HS Munich), who won bronze in the 78 kilogram weight class. After about three minutes in the fight for third place against France's Oceane Zatchi Bi, Igl seized her chance and defeated her opponent. She summed up afterwards that it was just fun to be on the mat and that the atmosphere and the event are indescribable and impressive.

Fabian Kansy (TU Munich) and Marvin Belz (Uni Potsdam) also competed on the mats in the men's competition. Belz had to admit defeat in the round of 16 to the later bronze medal winner. For Fabian Kansy the tournament also ended in the preliminary round against the local hero Bilige Buhe (CHN). With five individual medals, the German judoka are now looking forward to the team competitions.

Table tennis: Joy over bronze after defeat in the semi-finals

A sovereign 3:0 victory in the quarterfinals against Romania caused great joy in the German men's team. By making it into the top four, Florian Bluhm (University of Hohenheim), Kirill Fadeev (University of Düsseldorf), Tobias Hippler, Nils Hohmeier (both IU Internationale HS) and Pekka Pelz (Saarland University) had already secured the bronze medal.

Coach Gianluca Walther was thrilled with his team, which had literally rolled over their Romanian opponents in three sovereign singles. He was really happy that they achieved our goal of winning a medal in Chengdu, he said after the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, the team could not use the historic chance to be the first German team to reach a final at the FISU Games. In the semifinals, Germany lost 3-2 to Taiwan after a great fight and ended up in a very good bronze place together with the Japanese.

Between the two matches in the team, the individual competitions had also started for all women and men of the German National Student Team. In the first round, the German players attracted attention with victories almost without exception.
