For ten years, Jonas Dorissen was actively involved in university sports. He began participating in gymnastics at the university sports center in 2012, initially as a participant. A year later, he became an instructor in the sport. In 2015, when a new chairman was needed, he assumed this role. Dorissen mentions that he never gave much thought to what motivated him to become chairman; it simply "happened." He held this position until he transitioned from academia to industry in 2022. Gymnastics remained a constant companion throughout much of his studies.
As chairman, Dorissen took on significant responsibilities in course and event planning. He particularly recalls the preparation for performances at the university sports show. Gymnastics was also showcased at other events, where Dorissen was involved in organizing and executing performances and presentations. He played a role in selecting teams for the German University Championships and the adh Cup in gymnastics. Additionally, he managed day-to-day tasks such as coordinating courses and instructors, serving as a bridge between the university sports center and instructors/participants.
Jonas Dorissen's passion for gymnastics dates back to his teenage years. He initially stopped due to an injury, stress, and competitive pressure. Upon commencing his mechanical engineering studies in Aachen in 2009, he decided to resume gymnastics, albeit in the more relaxed atmosphere of university sports. At that time, gymnastics consisted of three courses with only about 15 participants. Over the course of twelve years, gymnastics has evolved into a popular and sizeable sport with nearly 150 participants per semester, with courses consistently fully booked.
There was palpable excitement leading up to the university sports show. After being presented with the Volunteer Award from Sparkasse Aachen by board member Dr. Christian Burmester, Dorissen eagerly anticipated the impressive performances by various sports groups. For the first time in twelve years, he deliberately avoided information about the gymnastics group's performance, heightening his anticipation and joy. Even today, Dorissen maintains close ties with many regular participants in university sports gymnastics, illustrating how university sports fosters connections not only during one's studies but also beyond.
