New sport Pickleball

The start of the winter semester also marked the start of the new registration period for Aachen's university sports courses. Demand was again very high. Many courses were fully booked within a few minutes. For all those who did not get a place in the course of their choice, there is the individual booking option for many sports. This is always activated one day in advance. The range of sports on offer at the HSZ is extensive and continues to grow. There are now over 100 sports on offer. New this year is pickleball. This is a ball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is played on a small court with a perforated plastic ball and paddle rackets.

University sports now also on Instagram

The HSZ has recently been added to Instagram. It provides basic information about the extensive range of sports on offer and publishes lots of up-to-date information. Sports enthusiasts at Aachen's universities can find information about the sports on offer, events, extra tours and much more.

Work on the new building continues

Intensive work is continuing on the construction site of the new Königshügel building to complete the shell. At the beginning of November, the wooden beams for the roof structures of the sports hall and for the three multifunctional rooms will be delivered and installed. The topping-out ceremony is scheduled for next January. The new sports hall is scheduled for completion at the end of 2025 and can be put into operation by the university sports center in the summer semester of 2026.

Start of the winter season with the two snow events

In November, the University Sports Center kicks off the snow sports season and celebrates it with two events at SnowWorld Landgraaf. Here, newcomers to the slopes and experienced skiers and snowboarders can try out the first runs of the winter semester together. Ulrich Weber, head of the HSZ, is delighted that the snow events also give beginners a taste of snow sports. The HSZ wants to offer many students an insight into snow sports as easily and close to the university as possible.

Further event highlights: Ice Hockey Uni Cup and DHM Freeski and Snowboard

Winter sports continue with the Ice Hockey Uni Cup in December. This ice hockey tournament organized by the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and medicine student councils is the highlight of the winter semester. In March, the HSZ also hosts the German University Championships (DHM) for snowboarding and free skiing. The event takes place in Les Deux Alpes, France. The organizer is the General German University Sports Association (adh). Snow sports enthusiasts from all over Germany are expected to attend the DHM.

University Sports Show 2025 again at Theater Aachen

After the university sports show took place in the Stadttheater for the first time last year, the HSZ is looking forward to having the performances of the athletes and the awards ceremony shine in the light of the Stadttheater again this semester. With a great deal of creativity and aesthetics, the spectacular choreographies of the sports groups ensure a unique conclusion to the events of the winter semester in Aachen.

Extra tours to snow sports destinations

For the start of the winter semester 2024/2025, the HSZ is pleased to offer the popular extra tours. These special sports and leisure activities are aimed at students and employees of the university and offer the opportunity to do sports outside of Aachen. Now in winter, snow sports are at the top of the list with several destinations and courses for all advanced levels. New this year is an extra tour to the Stubai Valley. The extra tours not only promote sporting activity, but also the exchange and community experience among the participants from several university locations.

FISU World University Games are looking for volunteers

Next year, the world's largest multi-sport event awaits us, which volunteers can experience up close. The FISU World University Games will take place in the Rhine-Ruhr region from July 16 to 27, 2025. Over 12 days, athletes from 150 countries will compete for bronze, silver and gold in 18 different sports. Volunteers are needed to support this major sporting event. Volunteer registration is still possible until October 31, 2024.

The HSZ is looking forward to an eventful winter semester with an extensive range of sports and a full calendar of events.
