The university sports groups presented their impressive talents at the university sports show. This was the second time the show had taken place at Theater Aachen. “The University Sports Show is an exceptional event for Theater Aachen in a positive sense,” says General Director Elena Tzavara. The show involves up to twice as many participants on and behind the stage as in normal operations.
Every year, the university sports show demonstrates anew how diverse and important sport is for Aachen's universities. Students from Aachen's universities performed together on stage. Prof. Martina Klocke, Vice-Rector for Diversity and Equal Opportunities at FH Aachen, is particularly interested in the diversity of university sports, which was on display on stage at the show. Sport brings together a wide variety of groups, which promotes exchange and creates space for students from all universities.
The sports groups presented creative choreographies and performances. From funny numbers, such as the acrobatics ensemble under the motto “Summer, sun, shark alarm”, to dramatic performances, such as the jazz group to Taylor Swift's “Don't Blame Me”, everything was there. The big band “Full House” from FH Aachen provided the musical backdrop.
Honoring successful athletes
Another part of the show was the honoring of successful athletes who achieved outstanding results in competitions in the past year. In 2024, 77 Aachen university athletes achieved placings in national and international competitions in ten different sports and were honored. Ullrich Weber, Head of the University Sports Center, is delighted to see how motivated students from Aachen are to achieve top sporting performances all over the world.
STAWAG has been supporting the HSZ as a partner at various events for years. As every year, it awarded the top sports prize. This year, Runa Tschekorsky Orloff received STAWAG's top sports prize for her achievements in the sport of cyr. She took 7th place at the World Championships in Almere in the Netherlands. Kirsten Haacke from STAWAG praised the ambition of the top student athletes. She emphasized that students who achieve top sporting performances alongside their studies show great commitment to sport and that STAWAG wanted to honor this with the award.
Talida Krietemeyer received the honorary award
In addition to sporting achievements, the Sparkasse Aachen's honorary office award highlights honorary office in a special way. Talida Krietemeyer was honored for her extraordinary commitment as chairwoman for the sport of gymnastics. Sparkasse Aachen has been supporting university sports for 23 yearsErich Timmermanns, press spokesman of Sparkasse Aachen, explained that community, togetherness and openness are important values for Sparkasse Aachen, which are also reflected in university sports. This is why the Sparkasse is particularly pleased to honor honorary commitment with its prize every year.
University Sports Aachen is supported by numerous volunteers who make events such as the University Sports Show possible. Juliana Kirchhof from the Aachen University Sports Department praises this commitment: “The volunteers show their passion for sport through their work. This year's honorary award winner Talida has shown an extremely high level of commitment to gymnastics in university sports.”
New building on the Königshügel continues
Work is continuing on the new replacement sports hall at Königshügel. Everything is currently going according to plan. The construction work should be completed in 2026. The next university sports show will therefore probably take place in Theater Aachen again before the move into the new hall is completed in 2027.
