With the “Respect in University Sports” campaign, Aachen University Sports and the Sports Department of the Aachen Student Unions have sent a clear signal for appreciative, discrimination-free coexistence. The campaign was officially presented at the representatives' meeting on January 20, and the Aachen University Sports code of conduct was symbolically signed once again.
Aachen University Sports attracts tens of thousands of students, employees, and university members every semester. With its wide range of sports activities, it not only contributes to physical health, but is also an important social meeting place. This is exactly where the “Respect in University Sports” campaign comes in. It makes it clear that sporting activities can only reach their full potential if everyone involved feels safe, respected, and welcome. “University sports bring people together – our universities, the people who attend them, and our city. We weren't interested in imposing bans, but rather in highlighting the shared values that characterize university sports. Respect is the foundation that ensures sports remain a space where encounters, fairness, and joy are possible,” emphasizes Janine Weide, sports representative for the Aachen student bodies.
At the heart of the campaign is the newly formulated and now officially adopted code of conduct. By signing it, all those involved in university sports in Aachen commit themselves to respecting the dignity of all people and actively ensuring non-discriminatory participation in sports. The code formulates a clear zero-tolerance stance toward discrimination, racism, sexism, queerphobia, misogyny, ableism, ageism, religious discrimination, and any form of violence and inhumane behavior. Cooperation with the equality offices of RWTH Aachen University and Aachen University of Applied Sciences is also firmly established.
