Gravel riding in German, “Schottern” has been the cycling trend of recent years. The idea is to ride gravel, field, or not-too-steep forest paths at higher speeds with an off-road capable bike equipped with drop handlebars. The focus is on experiencing landscapes away from regular traffic routes, with the added benefit of not having to share the path with cars or other motorized vehicles.

Gravel Level 1

Target Group and Prerequisites

The course is aimed at beginners in gravel riding. Participants should be able to comfortably cover gravel routes of about 25 km. You should have a functional bike and be able to ride it safely, being confident with braking, shifting, etc. No prior group‑riding experience is required for Level 1.

Content and Objectives

We will explore the area around Aachen on interesting off‑road routes. We start with distances of roughly 25 km and increase the length gradually. Although the program has a sporting focus, fun is always the priority. The course provides an introduction to group off‑road riding, with an initial target average speed of 17 km/h. The first meeting will take place at the “Brückchenweg” parking lot; subsequent meeting points may vary to allow us to ride different attractive routes.

Special Notes

Please note that gravel riding involves more elevation gain than road‑bike riding.

Gravel Level 2

Target Group and Prerequisites

The Level 2 course is intended for experienced gravel cyclists who already have group‑riding experience. Participants typically ride at an average speed of about 20 km/h and cover a distance of roughly 45 km per outing.

Content and Objectives

In addition to building endurance and teaching riding technique, the main focus is enjoyment of gravel riding together with like‑minded cyclists. The difficulty level will increase over time, but it will always be adapted to the group’s ability. Although the course has a sporting orientation, fun remains the top priority. Participants will also get to discover the most beautiful routes in the Aachen region.

Special Notes

Please keep in mind that gravel riding involves more elevation gain than road‑bike riding.
