Vernacular Jazz refers to social dances rooted in African American communities and developed alongside jazz music in the early 1900s. The class focuses on rhythm, improvisation, and individual expression through solo jazz movements such as Charleston, Tap-inspired steps, and classic jazz steps. This course is based on solo dancing and does not include partnered dances.

Target Group and Requirements

This level is targeted towards all participants with little to no experience in the Charleston. Prior experience is not required.

Content and Objectives

To develop rhythm, body awareness, and confidence while learning the fundamentals of Vernacular Jazz. The class focuses on repetition, rhythm exercises, and guided improvisation, helping participants express themselves freely and feel comfortable joining social jazz events.
