The University Sports Center (Hochschulsportzentrum, HSZ) of RWTH Aachen is looking resolutely toward the future: the outdoor facilities at Königshügel are set to be modernized and reimagined to meet upcoming demands. In collaboration with the State Real Estate and Construction Company (BLB NRW), the HSZ is driving the future-oriented and innovative development of university sports in Aachen!

An Opportunity for Change and Modernization The starting point for this transformation is the expansion of the Chemistry Campus, which necessitated the loss of parts of the existing sports areas. Building on this, a new concept has been developed that optimizes the use of available space while simultaneously creating room for innovative sports offerings.

Redefining Outdoor Sports in Aachen Students in Aachen can look forward to an expanded range of activities, including padel and pickleball courts, beach handball fields, and a Tartan track with floodlights. Additionally, the existing natural grass area will be replaced with artificial turf to enable more intensive use. Sustainability is a key focus of the planning: eco-friendly materials will be used, additional trees planted, and green spaces expanded.

A Space for Community Moreover, Königshügel will be further strengthened as a hub for social interaction. Planned relaxation areas will provide spaces for rest, exchange, and events. In the future, students in Aachen will not only benefit from state-of-the-art sports facilities but also have new opportunities to network beyond their own fields of study.

The modernization will, however, also bring temporary limitations: many closures have already been implemented or are planned for the near future. We regularly provide updates on all current developments via our Instagram account and website.
