Old highlights and new changes: The University Sports Center kicks off the new winter semester with a full program

Start of registration for over 100 sports

The start of the winter semester also marked the start of the new registration period for Aachen's university sports courses. As every year, the demand was enormous and many courses were fully booked within a few minutes. Students who were initially left empty-handed can be placed on waiting lists or choose from the wide range of sports on offer by booking individual dates. These are activated one day in advance. The range of sports on offer at the HSZ is wide-ranging and continues to grow - over 100 types of sport are now on offer.

New sport: Gravel

A new highlight has recently been added for cycling fans: the gravel workshop. The HSZ is picking up on a current trend. This sport, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, offers both fun and a sporting challenge - and allows you to actively explore Aachen's surroundings on a gravel bike. The course is divided into two levels so that even gravel beginners can gain their first experience.

Construction site update

On the construction site of the new Königshügel building, intensive work continues on the completion of the sports hall. Work is currently still being carried out on the façade of the new building. This will be followed by further interior work, such as laying the floor, but the access route to the new building and the design of the outdoor area are also still to be completed. Construction of the new building and the move into the new sports hall is scheduled for summer semester 2026.

New semester full of events

In November, the University Sports Center traditionally kicks off the snow sports season and celebrates this with two events at SnowWorld Landgraaf. This is where newcomers to the slopes and experienced skiers and snowboarders can try out the first runs of the winter semester together. With the snow events, the HSZ enables all participants, regardless of their level, to gain new experiences on skis or snowboards. Every year, these events are among the sporting highlights of the winter semester and also promote social interaction.Winter sports continue with the Ice Hockey Uni Cup in December. This ice hockey tournament organized by the Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Medicine student councils is considered the highlight of the winter semester. The participants have been looking forward to showing off their skills for months, not only on the ice but also in the traditional cheerleading competition. The winners of the tournament are rewarded with the coveted thyssenkrupp Trophy.
This winter semester, the Stadttheater Aachen once again opens its doors to the HSZ to present the university sports show in February. With a great deal of creativity and aesthetics, the spectacular choreographies of the sports groups ensure a unique conclusion to the events of the winter semester in Aachen.

Extra tours in the snow

Those who enjoy snow sports also have the opportunity to choose from the extensive range of extra tours that the HSZ offers every year. These special sports and leisure activities are aimed at students and employees of RWTH Aachen University and offer the opportunity to experience sport outside of Aachen. Ski and snowboard courses are offered at various levels of difficulty to cater for all abilities. The focus is not only on the sporting activity, but also on the community experience and the exchange between participants from different university locations

New head of the HSZ

Not only in the sports program, but also in the team of the HSZ there is news. From 01.10.2025, Judith Blau will take over the management of the University Sports Center, replacing her predecessor Ulrich Weber. With her experience in the sports sector, particularly through her work at the North Rhine-Westphalia State Sports Association, she will coordinate new projects at the HSZ and continue existing ones - including various construction projects such as the Königshügel sports hall - and the HSZ is looking forward to an eventful winter semester with an extensive range of sports and a packed calendar of events.
