Getting Active Together: The RWTH FH Sports Day powered by Sparkasse Aachen was a huge success

Get a taste of the HSZ

With over 100 sports programs, the Aachen University Sports Center has long been the region’s largest sports provider. Finding the right program for oneself among this diverse selection poses a challenge for most people—one that the RWTH FH Sports Day powered by Sparkasse Aachen is perfectly suited to address. Come rain or shine, students, staff, and interested visitors were able to try out the sports of their choice at a total of 47 introductory sessions. From the Rhönrad to baseball to skiing on recycled snow at SnowWorld Landgraaf: on Wednesday, every wish was fulfilled.

Institutsolympiade

Every year, the Institute Olympics stands out for its imaginative games and strong team spirit, which is rewarded at the end of the day. This year, the WildCATS team from the Chair of Computer-Aided Analysis of Technical Systems secured the trophy. They prevailed against 29 other institutes from RWTH and FH Aachen in various sports and game stations. The competition focused particularly on dexterity, speed, and team spirit. Every year, the Institute Olympics offer a chance to get to know colleagues outside of the university and to demonstrate one’s skills as a team. The trophy for the best fans was ceremoniously awarded to Team Palko Power from the Institute of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry, presented by the Friends and Sponsors of Aachen University Sports.

Tournaments

Meanwhile, the action continued at the various sports facilities of the University Sports Center: Teams competed in exciting tournaments in badminton, beach volleyball, small-field soccer, tennis, and table tennis. At the closing ceremony, the winners were delighted to receive their prizes and wrap up the active day together. The results of the tournaments can be viewed on the HSZ website.

The RWTH FH Sports Day powered by Sparkasse Aachen is also characterized each year by the collaborative partnership and cooperation between RWTH and FH Aachen. Students from both universities spent the day together on the Königshügel, once again underscoring that university sports bring people together.

Many helping hands

Over 250 volunteers were on hand and made this year’s Sports Day truly special once again. In addition to volunteer help, external support is also crucial for organizing a major event like the RWTH FH Sports Day powered by Sparkasse Aachen. Once again this year, the University Sports Center was able to rely on Sparkasse Aachen as a long-standing partner. “We have been a sponsor of university sports since 2007 and are very happy to support it. It gives us great pleasure to be part of fantastic events like Sports Day and to experience the many introductory courses and hands-on activities,” summarized Ms. Römer from Sparkasse Aachen.

Techniker Krankenkasse is also participating as a partner once again to highlight the importance of sports as a crucial step toward preventive health care and as a necessary balance to the stressful daily routine of student life. With this year’s Smoothie Bike, students get active and can then refuel with a freshly prepared smoothie. In addition, Techniker Krankenkasse is involved in other health initiatives throughout the year: “Together with the HSZ, our goal is to promote student health in a sustainable way.”

On June 10, visitors got a glimpse not only of the diverse sports programs offered by Aachen’s universities, but also of the sports facilities around Königshügel. While some facilities remain unchanged, the HSZ is undergoing modern upgrades through major construction projects—such as the redesign of the outdoor facilities and the construction of the new Königshügel sports complex—to sustainably expand and improve university sports. Aachen’s sports enthusiasts can soon look forward to the inauguration of the modernized sports facilities!
