Chess is a complex board game, requiring great intellectual agility, and it is a sport. The “game of kings” is therefore ideally suited for university sports. If you’ve always wanted to learn the secrets of the game or are seeking a worthy opponent, you are at the right place in university sports.

Chess Level 1

Target Group and Requirements

This course is aimed at everyone who have an interest in chess. There are no prerequisites.

Contents and goals

  • Learning the rules and etiquette of chess
  • Familiarization with the chess equipment
  • Basics of tactics, opening and endgame
  • Platform for further development of the course chess in the University Sports Center

Target Group and Requirements

This course is for all chess enthusiasts with previous experience.
The rules should be known to the player and some games should have already been played online or offline.

  • Basics of tactics, opening and endgame
  • Strategic basics
  • Time management during the game
  • Platform for further development of the course chess in the University Sports Center

Chess Level 3

Target Audience and Prerequisites

This course is aimed at advanced players with extensive playing experience who possess a broad foundational knowledge. Participation in the course is recommended for players who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Participation in the Level 2 course
  • Playing experience in a chess club or in chess tournaments
  • An online blitz rating of 1300 or an online rapid rating of 1500 on chess.com
  • An online blitz rating of 1600 or an online rapid rating of 1800 on lichess.org

The course will primarily be conducted in English.

Content and Objectives

The goal of the course is to familiarize participants with various advanced concepts of chess and prepare them for chess as a competitive sport. To this end, a wide range of topics from all areas of chess will be covered. Some possible topics include:

Analysis

  • Joint analysis of master games
  • Analysis of participant games

Opening

  • Targeted preparation of specific opening variations
  • Extensive opening training

Middlegame

  • Short-term and long-term planning
  • Complex middlegame positions
  • Dynamic piece play
  • Tactics training

Endgames

  • Practical endgame training
  • Broad endgame theory

Preparation for competitions and tournaments

Chess Meet-Up

Target Group and Requirements

This offer is aimed at athletes with club sports experience, as well as those who have already completed the course system of the University Sports Center. “Meet-Ups” are equivalent to open training.

Contents and Goals

The meet-up offer active athletes the opportunity to practice their sport. There is no instruction by a HSZ course instructors.

A HSZ course instructor is present to monitor correct set-up and use of equipment. Equipment has to be set up by the athletes themselves.
